-as you have found out thunderbolt 3 is the thing now.it is compatible with USB. If you did have TB3 and wanted to connect a thunderbolt 2 or 1 device, Apple would sell you a TB3>>Tb1 adapter. It only works 1 way though. You can’t go tb>>TB3.
